Introduction
At Sound Brickworks, we pride ourselves on transforming dreams into reality, even when the odds are, well, odd. Our latest project, “Outdoor Fireplace Build,” showcases our dedication, craftsmanship, and unwavering commitment to our clients. This blog post details our journey in rescuing a homeowner from a botched job-in-progress by a previous contractor and turning their outdoor space into a stunning, functional masterpiece.
Part 1: The Problem
When we first arrived at the site, it was clear that the homeowners had been taken advantage of by a previous contractor. They were left with a half-finished, subpar fireplace that was riddled with issues. To support them, we provided a professional witness statement highlighting the numerous faults and building code violations:
4-inch Block Installed Against Wood Siding: Without any vapor barrier, risking moisture damage.
Excess Mortar: Filled the cavity between the wood siding and blockwork.
Firebrick Misuse: Used structurally in the block wall instead of appropriate materials.
Improper Mortar: Firebrick was installed with Portland cement mortar instead of refractory mortar.
Mismatched Dimensions: The firebox and chimney footing did not match the quoted dimensions.
Mortar Staining: Significant staining on the house and concrete patio.
No Masking: Lack of protective measures for the home and landscape.
Deteriorated Bricks: Bricks on-site were spalled and structurally unsound.
Improper Siding Removal: Siding of the home wasn't removed prior to blockwork installation.
Inconsistent Mortar Joints: Varied between 0.25 inches to 1 inch.
Adding to the distress, the homeowners had to dig the concrete foundation footing themselves because the previous contractor rarely showed up, appearing only three times over two months. The contractor had also misquoted them on a Cost-Plus contract, allowing him to extend the project's duration indefinitely while being paid hourly. His quote was less than what his contract dictated he would make, further compounding the homeowners' frustration. We wrote the homeowner's a professional witness statement to keep in their back pocket.
Part 2: The Process
Determined to rectify the situation, we started by dismantling the faulty work and clearing the site. We then laid a solid foundation, ensuring every step adhered to building codes and high-quality standards.
Building the Structure: Our team meticulously constructed the fireplace, using appropriate materials and techniques.
Firebox and Chimney: We adhered to the quoted dimensions, ensuring a perfect fit and function. Refractory mortar was used to meet building codes and enhance the fireplace's durability.
Arch and Hearth: We built a custom arch (above), to fit the aesthetic of the fireplace, and a custom charcoal-colored cove-joint concrete hearth (Link to Instagram Video).
Attention to Detail: We protected the surrounding areas with masking and cleaned up any mortar stains, leaving the site spotless.
Part 3: The Solution
The transformation was nothing short of spectacular. The once chaotic and unsafe construction site was now home to a beautiful, functional outdoor fireplace that the homeowners could be proud of.
Aesthetic Appeal: The fireplace's design complemented the home's exterior, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication.
Structural Integrity: With a solid foundation and proper materials, the fireplace was built to last, providing warmth and enjoyment for years to come.
Homeowner Satisfaction: The homeowners were thrilled with the final product, grateful for our professionalism and dedication.
