Failure to Function: A Chimney Rebuild
Project type
Chimney
Date
December 2025
Location
Lakewood, WA
This chimney required a full rebuild due to advanced structural deterioration and multiple internal safety failures discovered during demolition.
Initial inspection showed exterior masonry failure. Once dismantled, additional hazards were identified:
- Failed flue liners
- Internal structural breakdown
- Combustible materials inside the flue
- Large animal nesting debris, including wood and stored food
These conditions presented fire risk and ruled out partial repair.
Take a look at the pictures to see what we found!
The rebuilt chimney is structurally sound, aesthetically pleasing, and, like it should have been, now safe to use. The acrylic-fortified black-colored cap provides enhanced weather resistance and a clean, modern finish.
Once a chimney reaches this level of internal failure, surface repairs are ineffective for structural soundness and safe use. At this level of failure and hazard, a full rebuild was the only way to remove combustible materials, correct liner failure and rebuild internals, and restore safe operation.
Rebuilding isn’t always optional. In this case, it was the only safe outcome. And the outcome here is a beautiful chimney!
