A Fresh Finish: Limewashing Stone Inside & Out

The homeowners loved the stonework on their home but felt it had become too dark and heavy over time—both outside and in. They reached out to us to see if there was a way to lighten the look without removing the stone or covering it up entirely.

We suggested limewash. A breathable, natural finish that allows the texture of the stone to stay visible while softening the overall look. It also patinas beautifully over time, giving it an aged-in-place feel that doesn’t look like paint. It's like a graceful facelift for masonry.

We started outside, first rebuilding their chimney top and cleaning off organic debris from the masonry and stripping some overspray paint from the stonework, then treating the chimney stack with a custom color mix the customer decided would be just perfect for their home. Once that was finished, we moved inside to limewash the living room fireplace surround.

The result is subtle but dramatic: the same stone now looks brighter and more refined without losing any of its natural character.
